Task 1.3 Online Micro Teaching Reflection

  • What did you like and dislike about online teaching?

What I like about online teaching is that it us flexible and learners can work at their own pace. It's fun as many online tools can be used and the online platform are easy to use and access. What I dislike about online teaching is that there is no proper teacher-student eye contact and therefore some learners don’t respond so you are not sure if they are there and listening. There could be technical issues and sometimes due to load shedding learners might struggle to join and miss a class.

  • What new skills did you learn through this experience?

Good communication skills – as online learning environment requires clear, concise instruction. Technological literacy and time management skills.

  • What would you do differently?

What I would do differently is monitor learners' performance during online teaching and stimulate conversation, I would make sure that everyone's cameras and mics are working before the session.

  • Did you choose appropriate tools to teach your online lesson, explain why?

Yes, I have chosen appropriate tools to teach my lesson as it is easy to access the content, there is lots of interaction and the material is relevant as it has strong connection to the curriculum and topics used.

  • How has this experience developed you for teaching in a school?

Times are always changing, and new things have always been introduced, therefore as a teacher you need to be flexible and willing to learn and discover new things to keep up with the changing times, that’s why I feel this experience will help me in school as I am familiar with teaching face-to face and online and being able to adapt my lessons to suit both types of classes.

Thanks for the engaging lesson on emotions.

You began by explaining the different emotions- however explain in your own words and not just read off the slide for grade 3. A fun creative idea using the spinning wheel- however I think you should have acted out an example for the kids- this also breaks the ice especially in an online space. Remember switching on your camera makes your connection unstable as well as your students.

Learners enjoyed and interacted well during the lesson by acting out the emotions, however you did not improvise and accommodate for learners who could not put on their videos. perhaps they could have used their mics or the chat box.

Overall an engaging lesson

Thanks…

Your lesson was planned and executed beautifully in the way you tried to get the students to interact and asked to put cameras on and show the expressions; I think this was really fun and would help the students relate well to the topic. I really admire how you made your own resource at home as well, this would make it easy to transition the lesson into a face-to-face lesson.
